EYE,  RED EYE

Dacrocystitis

  • Infection of the lacrimal sac secondary to obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct
  • Inflammation over the medial canthus
  • Often history of watery eye for months before because duct was blocked
  • Staph, strep or gram negatives
  • Mx
    • Steam/moist compresses
    • Analgesia
    • If mild – masage sac and duct
    • Cefalexin 500mg q6h
    • If significant pain – ophthal consider surgical drainage
  • Chronic – recurrent mucopurulent discharge, may have mucocele – needs surgical management
