Nasolacrimal duct obstruction

  • Common in children
  • Intermittent tearing and debris on the eyelases
  • Treatment
    • Massage nasolacrimal sac
    • Keep eye clean – wash with salt water as neede
    • Warm compresses – 5 min, 2-5/day
    • Chloramphenicol drops/ointment for infection or control Abx overgrowth
    • Refer for lacrimal duct probing
  • Refer if
    • Birth – 2 weeks – acute sticky eye with discharge – ED
    • Neonates with visible dilation of lacrimal sac, discoloration – ED
    • Over 12 months not responded to conservative measures
    • If severe discharge causing skin irritation
