MRSA Decolonization
- Topical treatments used to eliminate methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
- Involves antiseptic body wash and antibiotic nasal ointment for 5 days.
Why am I having Decolonisation Treatment?
- MRSA detected in a recent specimen.
- To reduce risk of recurrent infection and spread to others.
- Recommended if:
- Increased risk due to medical conditions like cancer, diabetes, weakened immune system.
- Planning an operation.
- Healthcare worker or carer.
Important Points about Decolonisation Treatment
- Heal skin infections before starting treatment.
- All household members should start treatment on the same day.
- Report any infections during or after treatment to your doctor.
- Stop treatment after 5 days; repeat only if instructed by a doctor.
- Consult doctor if you have eczema or psoriasis.
- Do not use on newborns (less than 2 months old).
Skin Care
- Stop treatment if skin irritation or redness occurs.
- To prevent dryness or skin tears:
- Gently pat dry with a towel.
- Use non-perfumed sorbolene-based cream for itchy or dry areas.
Before Starting Decolonisation Treatment
- Discard old toothbrush, razor, and deodorant rollers; buy new ones.
- Wash hairbrush and comb with soap and hot water.
- Remove body piercings for the treatment duration.
- Ensure each household member has their own towels.
Decolonisation Treatment Instructions
- Regular household cleaning and laundry:
- Vacuum floors and fabric chairs.
- Clean frequently touched surfaces, especially in bedroom and bathroom.
- Wash clothes, bed linen, and towels with detergent and hot water if possible.
TWO PART TREATMENT
- Nasal Ointment: Mupirocin 2% (Bactroban) – Prescription required.
- Antiseptic Body Wash: Triclosan 1% or Chlorhexidine 4% – Over-the-counter.
How to Use Nasal Ointment
- Wash hands with soap or hand sanitiser before use.
- Apply a small amount with a cotton bud inside each nostril.
- Press nostrils together and massage for 15 seconds.
- Avoid getting ointment in eyes; rinse with cool water if needed.
- Wash hands after application.
- Do not use other nasal ointments or sprays during the treatment period.
How to Use Body Wash
- Apply wash to all body areas with a washcloth or hands.
- Leave on skin for 2 minutes.
- Shampoo hair with body wash on days 1, 3, and 5; normal conditioner can be used.
- Rinse off thoroughly; do not use other soap during the treatment period.
- Close eyes and mouth while washing face or shampooing.
- Dry with a clean towel and wear clean clothes.
- Remove and clean dentures before bed; soak overnight in a denture cleaning product.
