- Placental tissue over the internal os
- Suspect anyone with vaginal bleeding in 2nd half of pregnancy
- Pain and uterine contractions usually not a significant feature
Placenta abruption
- Premature separation of a normally implanted placenta prior to delivery
- Risks – previous abruption, trauma, smoking, cocain, HTN, PPROM
- Clinical
- Vaginal bleeding
- Uterine tenderness
- Uterine contractions
Placenta acccreta
- Accreta, increta, percreta
- Too deeply attached, can grow into muscle wall, uterus, nearby organs
- Risk – placenta previa after a prior cesarean
- Profuse haemorrahge when attempting separation
Vasa previa
- Fetal bood vessels present in membranes covering the os
