Placenta praevia

  • Placental tissue over the internal os
  • Suspect anyone with vaginal bleeding in 2nd half of pregnancy
  • Pain and uterine contractions usually not a significant feature

Placenta abruption

  • Premature separation of a normally implanted placenta prior to delivery
  • Risks – previous abruption, trauma, smoking, cocain, HTN, PPROM
  • Clinical
    • Vaginal bleeding
    • Uterine tenderness
    • Uterine contractions

Placenta acccreta

  • Accreta, increta, percreta
  • Too deeply attached, can grow into muscle wall, uterus, nearby organs
  • Risk – placenta previa after a prior cesarean
  • Profuse haemorrahge when attempting separation

Vasa previa

  • Fetal bood vessels present in membranes covering the os
