Mood Disorders

  • used to be called ‘affective disorders’ but now called ‘mood disorders’ because it doesn’t only affect the transitory external affect
  • Best considered as ‘syndromes’ 🡪 cluster of signs/Sx sustained over weeks/months that represent a marked departure from a person’s normal habitual functioning 
  • Mood may be: normal, elevated or depressed (normal to have wide range but are in control)

MOOD DISORDERFEATURES
Major Depressive Disorder (Unipolar depression)only major depressive episodes (at least 2/52)
Bipolar disorderboth manic & depressive episodes or if mania alone (mania alone also called unipolar mania, pure mania or euphoric mania). 
Type I = one or more manic episodes with depressive episodes
Type II = episodes of hypomania instead of full mania
Hypomaniaepisode of manic Sx that does not meet the full criteria for mania because does not have social/occupational impairment & no psychotic features (DSM-IV-TR) (at least 4/7)
Maniaat least 1 wk or less if hospitalised. Abnormally elevated mood + DIGFAST (distractibility, indiscretion, grandiosity, flight of ideas, activity ↑, sleep ↓, talkativeness) (for at least 1/52)
Dysthymic disorderless severe form of MDD (2 yrs or more of depressed mood but not meeting criteria for MDD) 
Cyclothymic disorderless severe form of bipolar I disorder (2 yrs or more of frequently occurring hypomanic Sx that cannot fit mania & depressive Sx that cannot fit MDD)

  4. Substance/Medication-Induced Depressive Disorder
  5. Depressive Disorder Due to Another Medical Condition
  6. Other Specified Depressive Disorders
