Mood Disorders
- used to be called ‘affective disorders’ but now called ‘mood disorders’ because it doesn’t only affect the transitory external affect
- Best considered as ‘syndromes’ 🡪 cluster of signs/Sx sustained over weeks/months that represent a marked departure from a person’s normal habitual functioning
- Mood may be: normal, elevated or depressed (normal to have wide range but are in control)

Bipolar disorder | both manic & depressive episodes or if mania alone (mania alone also called unipolar mania, pure mania or euphoric mania). Type I = one or more manic episodes with depressive episodes Type II = episodes of hypomania instead of full mania | ||
Hypomania | episode of manic Sx that does not meet the full criteria for mania because does not have social/occupational impairment & no psychotic features (DSM-IV-TR) (at least 4/7) | ||
