Panic Attack

  • single, discrete episode of intense fear and discomfort accompanied by a cluster of physical symptoms.
    • Abrupt onset
    • A discrete period of intense fear of discomfort
    • Rapid onset <10mins
    • last no more than 15mins
  • physical symptoms:  STUDENTS FEAR the 3 C’s
  • SSweating
  • TTrembling
  • UUnsteadiness, dizziness
  • DDepersonalization, derealization
  • EExcessive heart rate, palpitations
  • NNausea
  • TTingling
  • SShortness of breath
  • FEAR of dying
  • FEAR of losing control
  • FEAR of going crazy
  • CChest pain
  • CChills
  • CChoking
  • The prevalence of panic attacks (not disorder) is 11.2% in adults
  • can occur in the context of anxiety disorders, other mental disorders, and medical conditions
  • Panic attacks in and of themselves are not pathological, and do not require treatment.
